JOE CALZAGHE is revelling in Kelly Pavlik’s weekend defeat to Bernard Hopkins and claimed he now feels like the outspoken American “never existed.”
Calzaghe has spent the last two months facing accusations that he is running scared of middleweight king Pavlik.
But the Welshman has always maintained the 26-year-old would not have been a worthy opponent for the final fight of his glittering career.
Calzaghe opted to face former four-weight world champion Roy Jones Jnr instead. And the pair will now meet at New York’s Madison Square Garden on November 8.
Critics in some quarters responded by suggesting Calzaghe was taking the easy way out by avoiding Pavlik.
But the 36-year-old is confident any doubters will now have been silenced by the way in which the American was “humiliated” by one of his former victims on Saturday night.
While Calzaghe eventually triumphed via a split points decision when he met Hopkins in Las Vegas back in April, Pavlik was outclassed from start to finish in Atlantic City by the 43-year-old veteran. And that was all the proof Calzaghe needed that he was right to choose Jones in the first place.
